OK friends, summer has quickly come and gone. And as it walks out the door it is taking the bounty of lush, fresh fruits from your produce section along with it. So we are sharing this with yall so that you can run to your nearest grocery store and pick up all of the juicy little berries before the winter prices kick in and you cringe at paying over $5 for a tiny container of blueberries.
This is something I eat almost every single day in the summer, and into the fall (once it gets really cold, I tend to want something warm for breakfast. But I have been known to eat a smoothie bowl beneath a heated blanket. No judgement!) It is packed with healthy good stuff; antioxidants, vitamins, fiber, protein, and the feeling that mother nature has blessed your palate with her magic. It is definitely a great way to start your day.
Smoothie bowls are easy to make, and extremely versatile. That’s why we love them! Mix it up every day with your base and your toppings so it never gets old. You are essentially just mixing a traditional smoothie, pouring it into a bowl and then adding fresh fruit and other toppings of your choice. I like to think of it as fruit soup!
What you will need:
Toppings are in your hands, switch it up and make grown up decisions. We list a bunch of other toppings we F*ck with further below.
Start with one cup of your choice of frozen fruit. We went with Wyman's Mango Berry mix! The blueberry, strawberry and mango combo is super vibrant and makes for a beautiful creamy consistency. Next, add half of one banana.
Measure one cup of non-dairy milk and pour that over your banana berry mix. We use Silk Almond Coconut Unsweetened Vanilla. It is important to always use the unsweetened milk, otherwise you are adding a ton of unnecessary sugar to your smoothie. Do not worry, the fruit will take care of the sweetness
Feel free to add a scoop of your choice of protein powder. We like to use a plant based vanilla, that way it complements the flavors. Here is where you can also add things like plain, unsweetened greek yogurt for extra creamy consistency.
OK you just made a super tasty, purple-ish smoothie. Pour that darling into a big, deep bowl. Whether its a fancy wooden bowl or a plastic kiddie dish, it will still taste fantastic. But I will warn you, it is going to be pretty at the end, and you will want to photograph it.
Here is where you get creative. We went full on ROYGBIV and had a fruit spread that Joseph’s techni-color coat would be envious of. We diced up strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, banana, kiwi, blackberry, etc. Arrange your berries in little swirls and designs, and complete your artwork with a sprinkling of shredded unsweetened coconut, and a handful of granola. We like to use Bear Naked because it is pretty low in sugar, and tastes delicious. You don’t want to turn this healthy meal into a sugar bomb. Always check your sugar levels on your add-ons.
Other things we like to add on top include chia seeds, ground flax seeds, a drizzle of almond butter, hemp hearts, golden raisins, toasted pepitas, goji berries, or any kind of nuts. Go crazy and make different combos depending on your morning mood!
If you feel like being extra healthy, make a green smoothie by simply throwing a handful of fresh spinach or kale into the blender along with your fruit! Here we suggest using a frozen pineapple or mango base to achieve that lush, green color. Mixing spinach with berries will yield you a brown smoothie, and it may not look as appetizing, jussayin!
We hope yall love the smoothie bowls you will create! Comment below to tell us your favorite ways to make them!
