What comes to mind with a craving for Mediterranean cuisine? The simple flavors that are distinctly found in Greek cooking. A spritz of lemon, aromatic oregano, refreshing cucumber, creamy feta and succulent meats. All of these tastes can be found at The Simple Greek, in East Providence.
When we checked out The Simple Greek, we checked in to sauce heaven. The selection will have any sauce lover feeling overwhelmed, in a good way (just how do you expect me to pick!?). Traditional and spicy hummus (we went with the spicy, and it was so good, we ended up ordering a to-go container of it to have at home),tzatziki, cucumber sauce, oy the list goes on and on!
We started off building a Gyro. A greek specialty we all love and also wonder the correct way to pronounce! Traditional shaved greek style meat (we got chicken) that is so juicy and succulent. And for toppings, we had spicy hummus, tzatziki, marinated tomato and cucumber, olive oil, and pepperoncini. All wrapped up in a soft wheat pita.
On the side, we of course had to go with greek fries. Don’t know what Greek fries are? Boy oh boy you are in for a great awakening. Crispy fries with red wine vinegar, garlic salt, oregano, and a healthy heap of feta cheese. With the warmth of the fries, the feta begins to soften and melt a little, creating mediterranean cheese fries that absolutely decimate any thoughts of American cheese fries you might ever have.
And for a sweet, we finished off with a classic cup of greek yogurt. Let me start by saying that I am not a fan of greek yogurt, but this one right here flipped my perception of it upside down. As I watched her prepare it, I noticed that the scoops maintained their shape just like a scoop of ice cream. This should give you an idea of how beautifully thick is yogurt is. We topped it off with pistachios, walnuts, dark chocolate chips, strawberries, blueberries, and imported greek honey. My god, this was such a wonderfully creamy and sweet way to end a meal.
We would like to thank The Simple Greek for welcoming us in to dine! Our expectation of Greek cooking has been elevated after eating with you. A truly delectable Greek meal, thank you!
